Avast's antivirus software is well known, but Avast also offers an excellent VPN. It is a fast and secure choice, however, it is also quite expensive. Avast offers new users a 30-day free trial.

As opposed to other providers who offer different protocols, Avast VPN only offers one protocol: OpenVPN over UDP with AES-256 encryption. This is a highly secure cipher that is considered military-grade and is the same encryption method used by banks. Avast utilizes other encryption technologies too, including ChaCha20 and the RSA-2048.

The Avast VPN client on desktops and Android devices will automatically select the best protocol for your connection. It initially tries to connect with OpenVPN before switching to Mimic If that fails. My experience has shown that this isn't the most intelligent mechanism for selecting a protocol. It would be better if you gave the user the choice to select a preferred protocol and tell you how successful it has been.

Avast VPN is a VPN with a lot of servers. It has more than 700 locations in over 34 countries. However I'm unsure if the list is kept up-to-date enough since the VPN didn't have any servers in China during my tests. There are a few distinctive elements of information that Avast keeps about your use including your full name and zip code.

Avast is based in the Czech Republic, which is GDPR-compliant and is not affiliated to any of the Eyes Alliance surveillance groups. They do keep a log of their connection to identify them and their no-logs policies does not explicitly exclude this. They accept payments via PayPal and credit cards, however they do keep billing data. They also allow a few of cookies to track your actions on the internet.
